Jakarta (ANTARA) – BYD has begun outlining its plans for humanoid robot technology by publishing a design for an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered robot developed in-house, according to a report by CarnewsChina on Sunday.

The design became public after China’s National Intellectual Property Administration released a patent document on 9 October 2026.

The document, titled “Embodied AI Robot”, depicts a human-shaped robot in black and white. Its design features a rounded head with no screen, and a body, arms and legs fitted with several joints to support movement.

The patent describes a robot designed to walk, maintain its balance and interact with its surroundings. Potential applications include services, education and industry.

However, the company has not confirmed whether the design in the patent document will be used in a final production model.

Earlier reports said Xiao Di stands 1.61 metres tall and weighs 58.5 kilograms. The robot is equipped with 31 degrees of freedom and hands capable of repeated positioning accuracy of around one millimetre.

These capabilities are intended to support tasks such as picking up objects, communicating through gestures and giving explanations using hand movements.

The robot development forms part of BYD’s strategy in embodied AI, a technology that integrates artificial intelligence with physical devices so they can interact with the real world.

The company has also expanded its involvement in the robotics ecosystem through an investment in Agibot in August 2023 and a shareholding in Percibot in April 2025.

In addition, a BYD factory in Changsha has previously served as a testing site for Ubtech’s Walker S1 industrial humanoid robot.

BYD executives have also previously outlined plans to deploy robots across the company’s dealership network, including to welcome customers, explain vehicle features and demonstrate in-car entertainment systems.

Although the design has been revealed, BYD has not announced the robot’s final specifications, mass-production schedule or official launch date.
