BYD has reportedly published a new patent covering technology to detect living beings underneath vehicles, as part of an effort to expand the use of computer vision and safety monitoring. Carnewschina reported on Saturday local time that the patented system works by capturing an image of the underside of the vehicle when the car is switched off, storing it as a reference image. Subsequently, images captured in real-time are compared against this reference. Rather than continuously analysing the entire under-vehicle area, the system first identifies parts that differ from the reference image. This architecture is designed to reduce unnecessary computing processes, as static components such as suspension, battery housing, aerodynamic panels, and the vehicle frame structure generally do not change from one scan to the next. Computational resources can thus be focused on new objects or movement detected beneath the vehicle. Once the changed area is isolated, the system extracts feature information to determine whether a living being is present and evaluate its condition. This patent is not a standalone development. BYD previously revealed technology for detecting passengers left behind inside a vehicle using impulse response radar data, frequency domain features, and signal angle of arrival analysis. The two systems complement each other in monitoring different sides of the vehicle. The strategy suggests BYD is building a broader sensor ecosystem combining computer vision technology, radar processing, and intelligent monitoring systems. The patent publication adds to BYD’s list of technologies focused on sensors, monitoring, and vehicle intelligence. Besides the under-vehicle living being detection system, the company recently revealed a method for detecting forgotten passengers inside the car based on radar signal analysis. Together with a number of patents related to solid-state batteries and charging technology, the documents demonstrate the breadth of research and development currently underway at BYD. However, the patent publication does not mean the technology will be immediately applied to production vehicles. To date, the patent documents have not disclosed vehicle applications, launch schedules, or commercialisation plans for the technology.
