BYD Officially Unveils M6 DM, a Hybrid MPV with a Range of 1,800 km on a Single Charge
Republika.co.id, Jakarta — BYD has officially unveiled its first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) in Indonesia, the BYD M6 DM, during a launch held at the Spike Air Dome, PIK 2, Tangerang, on Monday evening, 18 May 2026. The arrival of the M6 DM marks a new step for BYD in Indonesia, following the company’s previous focus on pure electric vehicles or battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
The M6 DM is equipped with plug-in hybrid technology that combines an electric motor with a petrol engine. BYD calls their PHEV technology DM, dual mode.
The M6 DM is positioned as a response to Indonesian consumers who desire electric vehicle efficiency but still require flexibility for long journeys without relying solely on public charging infrastructure. The M6 DM is also expected to reach a market in Indonesia where charging infrastructure remains limited.
‘We have already introduced seven EV models in Indonesia. Now, we are bringing the latest technology. BYD M6 is the first model with DM technology in Indonesia,’ said Eagle Zhao, President Director of PT BYD Motor Indonesia, at the launch.
Eagle said that DM technology is the result of BYD’s long development over two decades.
‘With BYD DM, you get the best of both worlds. EV-oriented technology, but with total freedom and confidence for daily life,’ Zhao said.
Maximal efficiency
He explained that BYD’s latest generation DM 5.0 technology is designed to deliver maximum efficiency and a smooth driving experience. He said that electric vehicles remain BYD’s ultimate goal. Therefore, hybrid technology serves as a bridge to a future of full electrification.
‘EV and DM are not two separate technologies. They are a perfect team creating a synergy for the future of mobility,’ he said.
In appearance, the BYD M6 DM’s design resembles its electric version. However, upon closer inspection, the M6 DM features a trapezoidal front grille and black over-fenders. Its dimensions maintain the mid-size MPV character, with a length of 4,710 mm and a seven-seat configuration.
