BYD M6 Sales Soar, Wuling Darion EV Looms: A Comparison of Chinese Electric MPVs
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Indonesian electric car market is becoming increasingly lively with family MPV models. Two names that have attracted considerable attention are the BYD M6 and the Wuling Darion EV.
Both compete in a similar segment: electric MPVs with three rows, a capacity of 7 passengers, and prices that are not too far apart. However, in terms of character, specifications, and market positioning, they have different approaches.
The BYD M6 appears as a family electric MPV with a relatively more compact body. This car has a length of 4,710 mm with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm.
Meanwhile, the Wuling Darion EV comes with larger dimensions. Its body length reaches 4,910 mm with a wheelbase of 2,910 mm.
This means that the Darion EV is closer to a premium MPV, focusing on a spacious cabin and passenger comfort, while the BYD M6 still feels more practical for daily use in urban areas.
In terms of performance, the BYD M6 is equipped with a 154 hp electric motor with a torque of 310 Nm. This car is available in several battery options, ranging from 55.4 kWh to 71.8 kWh, with a range of approximately 420 km to 530 km depending on the variant.
Meanwhile, the Wuling Darion EV offers more power, namely around 201 hp with the same torque of 310 Nm. This electric MPV uses a 69.2 kWh battery and is claimed to be able to travel up to 540 km based on the CLTC standard.
Both use a front-wheel drive (FWD) system. However, the Wuling Darion EV has added value with the use of sliding doors, which give a more premium impression and make it easier for passengers to get in and out.
In terms of price, these two electric MPVs are actually in a fairly close range.
The BYD M6 is marketed starting at around IDR 383 million, depending on the type and battery capacity chosen. Meanwhile, the Wuling Darion EV is priced starting at around IDR 356 million.
Interestingly, even though it has larger dimensions and features such as electric sliding doors, the initial price of the Darion EV is actually slightly cheaper than the BYD M6.
This price difference can be an important consideration for consumers looking for a family electric MPV with a spacious cabin but still competitively priced.
Looking at the specifications above, the Wuling Darion EV is actually quite aggressive. This car offers larger dimensions, electric sliding doors, higher power, to a more spacious cabin at an initial price that is actually slightly cheaper.
However, the BYD M6 has an advantage in terms of market momentum. This model was introduced earlier and has succeeded in building an image as a practical and relatively affordable family electric MPV.
BYD is also benefiting from the increasing popularity of its brand in the national EV market. The M6 was even once called one of the “game changers” in the Indonesian electric MPV segment.
Meanwhile, the Wuling Darion EV actually comes with a slightly different positioning. Its larger dimensions make this car closer to a premium MPV than just an ordinary family vehicle.
