BYD M6 DM Said to Accelerate the Transition to Electrified Vehicles

JAKARTA – BYD is optimistic that the introduction of the BYD M6 DM could accelerate the adoption of electrified vehicles in Indonesia and strengthen the company’s position in the national market for environmentally friendly vehicles. Eagle Zhao, President Director of PT BYD Motor Indonesia, said that over the past two years the Indonesian electric vehicle market has shown rapid growth and public acceptance of EVs has improved.

‘In the past two years, the electric vehicle market in Indonesia has developed very quickly. EVs are now widely accepted by the public,’ Zhao told reporters in Jakarta on Monday (18 May 2026).

‘Because the majority of Indonesian consumers still prefer internal combustion engine vehicles, as evidenced by their share of new four-wheelers or larger vehicles which stands at 67 per cent. In addition, new technologies such as electric vehicles also require long-term public education.’

Zhao noted that some global consumers still resist battery-powered EVs. The concerns are generally related to charging infrastructure and driving range.

Therefore, the company has introduced Dual Mode (DM) technology as a transitional solution to electrification.

‘There are still many consumers who want to experience the EV driving experience but are not fully comfortable with charging infrastructure or range anxiety,’ Zhao said.

According to him, BYD has recognised these challenges for around 20 years. The company has therefore developed electrification technology that remains EV-oriented but easy to adopt for daily use.

Zhao explained that customers already accustomed to pure electric vehicles can choose the M6 EV. Meanwhile, the M6 DM is aimed at users who want the EV-like driving experience without worrying too much about charging or range.

‘We believe we will open a new chapter through DM technology in Indonesia,’ Zhao said.
