JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Denza trademark dispute in Indonesia is still ongoing. Although the Supreme Court has rejected BYD’s cassation petition in the trademark case, the Chinese manufacturer’s legal process is not yet finished.

As an anticipatory step, BYD has also secured the name ‘Danza’ in Indonesia. The name has been registered with the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) since 11 August 2025.

Registration covers Class 12, which includes vehicles and their components, and Class 37 for services including maintenance, repair, and charging of electric vehicles.

‘We are still in process, and we have not said that we have lost or won. Because it is still in process, there are several more legal stages to pass. But all of these are currently being coordinated with our legal team,’ Luther said in Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (20/5/2026).

Nevertheless, BYD said it respects the court’s decisions that have been issued.

‘That at the core, we respect the decisions that have been issued by the court, particularly by the judiciary. However we believe the rights that should belong to BYD in the Denza matter should be returned to Denza,’ he said.

He said the use of the Danza name was prepared as an alternative should the legal process relating to Denza not show a clear point in the near future.

‘Even though this situation still looks unclear, we have also secured several brands that we can use as a backup, namely Danza. But we will strive that this brand indeed becomes ours, it should be owned,’ he said.

In the decision, BYD’s lawsuit was declared inadmissible due to issues of the legal subject or error in persona. The decision also reinforces the ‘first to file’ principle in Indonesia’s trademark protection system.

Despite trademark issues, BYD remains active in introducing Denza vehicle line to the Indonesian market. One example is the premium Denza B5 SUV which has recently been shown in a right-hand-drive version.
