BYD Humanoid Robot Steals the Show at Latest Technology Launch
Jakarta (ANTARA) – A BYD humanoid robot drew attention when it appeared dancing alongside dancers and singers at the launch of BYD Flash Charging technology and the Danza D9 and Danza Z9 GT electric cars in Jakarta on Wednesday.
The robot showed agile movements as it followed the music on stage. Its movements appeared synchronised with those of the dancers, making the performance one of the highlights of the launch of BYD’s latest technology and vehicles.
The performance also drew attention to the development of BYD’s humanoid robotics technology. The company had previously revealed the design of its first internally developed robot.
According to a Carnewschina report on Saturday (10 October), BYD officially unveiled the design of its self-developed humanoid robot after a design patent titled “Embodied AI Robot” was published by China’s National Intellectual Property Administration on 9 October 2026.
The patent describes an intelligent robot capable of walking, maintaining its balance and interacting with its surroundings. It is designed for use in services, education and industry.
The disclosed design features an anthropomorphic form with a slender appearance and a black-and-white colour scheme. The robot has a rounded, arched head without a screen, while its body, arms and legs are fitted with multiple joints.
The design resembles “Xiao Di”, or Little D, a humanoid robot that BYD had previously introduced briefly. However, the company has not officially confirmed whether the patented design is the final production model of Xiao Di.
Previously disclosed information puts Xiao Di at 1.61 metres tall and 58.5 kilograms in weight. The robot has 31 degrees of freedom and dexterous hands with repeat positioning accuracy of ±1 millimetre.
These capabilities enable it to perform a range of tasks, including grasping objects, communicating through gestures and explaining things while pointing to objects.
BYD’s robotics development strategy
BYD’s move into embodied artificial intelligence is part of a long-term strategy that began in 2022 with the formation of a dedicated research team.
The company aims to use its industrial scale to adapt robot hardware and systems, focusing on improving perception, decision-making and execution capabilities.
Alongside its in-house research and development, BYD is expanding its involvement in the robotics ecosystem through investment and collaboration.
BYD invested in Agibot in August 2023 and acquired a stake in Percibot in April 2025.
The company is also using its factories as testing sites. In one example, it brought Ubtech’s Walker S1 industrial humanoid robot to its plant in Changsha to handle and identify materials.
BYD executives have also previously indicated plans to deploy the robots across the company’s dealership network. They would handle standardised tasks such as welcoming customers, explaining vehicle features and demonstrating in-car infotainment systems.
