BYD Factory in Subang Officially Begins Operations
A newly established manufacturing facility in Subang, West Java, is ready to absorb 5,000 local workers to support the development of the national automotive industry.
During the inauguration of the Subang plant on Thursday, Liu Xueliang, General Manager of BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division, stated that the factory involves 5,000 local workers from various regions across Indonesia. “In order for the car models here to be produced perfectly, we already have 5,000 local workers from all over Indonesia. They are diligent; they work hard,” said Liu.
The workforce is projected to increase to approximately 20,000 people once the factory is operating at full capacity. Situated on 126 hectares of land, the factory represents an investment valued at tens of trillions of rupiah.
The plant has a maximum production capacity of up to 150,000 vehicles per year, which will be used to manufacture pure electric and hybrid cars. The facility encompasses four main automotive manufacturing processes: stamping, welding, painting, and assembly. The brand is bringing its proprietary technology and manufacturing processes to the facility to support the production of new energy vehicles in Indonesia.
The new facility is not only intended to meet BYD’s production needs in Indonesia but also serves as part of the development of a technology-based national automotive industry. “This production base is currently the largest 100 per cent new energy vehicle production base in Indonesia,” said Liu.
Attending the inauguration, the Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, expressed hope that BYD’s investment would not stop at vehicle production but would continue to expand within the national electric vehicle industry ecosystem, from upstream to downstream. This includes raw material processing, battery and battery pack manufacturing, electric vehicle manufacturing, domestic market development, and the battery recycling industry.
The government, according to Agus, hopes that BYD can further strengthen the linkages within the supply chain, including involving domestic component industries and suppliers. “Therefore, the inauguration of the production facility today is an important momentum because I am confident it will mark BYD’s transition from successful market development towards strengthening domestic manufacturing activities,” said Minister Agus Gumiwang.
To date, the BYD Atto 1, M6 EV, and M6 DM models have been produced locally.
