BYD Factory in Subang Caught in Fire, Suspected to be Triggered by Cigarette Butt
The PT BYD factory in Sawangan Village, Cipendeuy District, Subang Regency, caught fire on Wednesday (3/6/2026) afternoon. The fire is suspected to have been caused by a lit cigarette butt.
The Head of Public Relations for the West Java Regional Police, Kombes Pol Hendra Rochmawan, stated that investigators from the Subang Police have questioned several witnesses at the scene. He confirmed that there were no fatalities in the incident.
“In this incident, there were only material losses and no loss of life,” Hendra said on Thursday (4/6/2026).
He noted that the police, alongside relevant authorities, are still assessing the total losses resulting from the fire. An investigation into the exact cause of the blaze is also ongoing.
“The items burnt were papers. However, because the smoke was thick, it was initially mistaken for a large-scale fire,” he added.
Video footage of the fire at the PT BYD factory has been circulating on social media. An Instagram post from the account @ckpinfo suggested that the cause was likely a cigarette butt, citing initial information provided by a worker at the location. The footage showed thick black smoke rising from the project area, with several workers seen fleeing the site to ensure their safety.
