BYD Factory Construction in Subang Marred by Thuggery from Civil Organisations
Jakarta — Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is currently constructing a factory in Subang, West Java. However, the construction process has been disrupted by acts of thuggery carried out by civil organisations (ormas).
Upon learning of the situation, the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) immediately established communication with BYD to resolve the issue of ormas interference in the factory construction process in Subang, West Java.
"Today we will try to contact our colleagues at BYD to find out how the situation stands," said Deputy for Investment Promotion at the Ministry of Investment and Downstreaming/BKPM, Nurul Ichwan, on Wednesday (23/4/2025).
He stated that after establishing communication with BYD, the BKPM would coordinate with the Anti-Thuggery Task Force to ensure the disruptive activities could be handled effectively.
Furthermore, according to Nurul Ichwan, the BKPM has consistently maintained that acts of thuggery and illegal levies are highly disruptive not only in terms of comfort for business operators, but would also tarnish Indonesia's investment climate image in the eyes of the world.
"It could easily be picked up by anyone that Indonesia is unsafe, that Indonesia has a thuggery problem," he said.
Nurul Ichwan conveyed that in the current global economic conditions, Indonesia should be enhancing its competitiveness to more easily attract the interest of foreign investors.
"In the current situation, attracting investment is not easy — all countries are becoming increasingly protectionist," he said.
