JAKARTA. The construction of BYD's factory in Subang, West Java has reportedly been disrupted by acts of thuggery carried out by elements of civil organisations (ormas). The Ministry of Industry has been in communication with BYD regarding the disturbance.

Deputy Minister of Industry Faisol Riza claimed to have received word from BYD that the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer was able to handle the disruption from the ormas elements. Faisol expressed hope that similar disturbances would not recur.

"We have checked. As usual, we hope it will not happen again. We have communicated, and BYD stated that they can handle it," said Faisol when met by reporters at the Ministry of Industry office on Monday (28/4).

Previously, Deputy Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) Eddy Soeparno said the construction of BYD's factory in Subang had been disrupted by ormas and acts of thuggery. He made the remarks whilst fulfilling an invitation to visit BYD's factory in Shenzhen, China.

Deputy for Investment Promotion at the Ministry of Investment/BKPM, Nurul Ikhwan, revealed that his office would confirm directly with BYD regarding the ormas disruption. Nurul said acts of thuggery not only disturbed comfort but also had an impact on investment in the country, as such incidents would tarnish Indonesia's image in the eyes of investors.

"It requires understanding from many parties that when we are in the current situation, attracting investment is not easy. All countries are becoming increasingly protectionist — even America, which is as wealthy as it is and possesses excellent technology, still maintains extraordinary protectionism in attracting investment into its country," said Nurul on Wednesday (23/4).

Nurul disclosed that the factory construction process was underway and the investor was serious about building the BYD factory. "We must not allow them (investors) to leave Indonesia, fail to build their investment, and close off employment opportunities for thousands of our compatriots who should be able to work there," he concluded.
