The construction of BYD's factory in Subang, West Java, has allegedly been disrupted by mass organisations (ormas) and acts of thuggery.

In response, the Deputy for Investment Promotion at the Ministry of Investment/BKPM, Nurul Ikhwan, explained that his office would confirm the matter directly with BYD regarding the disruptions before coordinating with the relevant authorities. He stated that thuggery not only disturbs comfort but also has a direct impact on investment in the country, as it tarnishes Indonesia's image in the eyes of investors.

"This requires understanding from many parties that when we are in the current situation, attracting investment is not easy. All countries are becoming increasingly protectionist — even America, which is such a wealthy nation with excellent technology, still has extraordinary protectionism in attracting investment into its country," he said when met at the Ministry of Investment office in Jakarta on Wednesday (23/4).

Nevertheless, Nurul disclosed that the factory construction process is underway and that the investor is very serious about building the BYD facility, which is expected to create employment opportunities for the local community.

"Those who contribute to the high cost of the economy and investment in Indonesia must consider that they are making an extraordinary contribution to denying opportunities for those seeking work. We must not allow investors to leave Indonesia, fail to build their investments, and close off employment for thousands of our fellow citizens who should be able to work there," he concluded.

Previously, the Vice Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), Eddy Soeparno, said that the construction of BYD's factory in Subang, West Java, had been disrupted by mass organisations and thuggery. He made the remarks whilst fulfilling an invitation to visit BYD's factory in Shenzhen, China.

Eddy called on the government to take firm action against thuggery that is impeding the pace of investment in the country.

"I have heard that there were problems related to thuggery and mass organisations disrupting the construction of BYD's production facilities. I believe the government must be firm in addressing this issue," Eddy said via his personal Instagram account, as quoted on Wednesday (23/4).
