BYD Car Driver Who Plunged into Bundaran HI Fountain Not Detained
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - KJS (23), the driver of the BYD electric car that plunged into the Bundaran Hotel Indonesia (HI) fountain pool in the early hours of Wednesday (25/3/2026), was not detained by police.
However, KJS has been charged under Article 310 of Law No. 22 of 2009 on Road Traffic and Transportation.
“He is required to compensate for the damaged facilities. The damage will be calculated by the DKI Jakarta provincial government,” said AKBP Ojo Ruslani, Head of the Gakkum Sub-Directorate of the Ditlantas of the Metro Jaya Police, when confirmed by Kompas.com on Wednesday (25/3/2026).
“The driver has been secured by police. After examination, there is no indication that the driver consumed alcohol,” he added.
Ojo also confirmed that there were no other passengers in the car besides KJS.
For information, KJS is a resident living in Komplek DPR RI I E26 RT 06/04, Meruya Selatan, Kembangan, West Jakarta.
However, when asked if KJS is the child of a DPR member, Ojo did not provide an answer. He only emphasised that KJS is an online taxi driver.
Previously reported, a black BYD electric car plunged into the Bundaran HI fountain pool. The car with licence plate B-1276-UNT was driven by KJS.
The car first hit the road barrier on MH Thamrin before being flung and entering the Bundaran HI pool.
“The incident occurred at 04.00 WIB. At that time, the car driver was travelling on Jalan MH Thamrin heading north. Upon reaching the Bundaran HI area, allegedly due to lack of caution, the car hit the road barrier,” said Ojo.
This incident was a single-vehicle accident. Ojo revealed that KJS had only been driving the electric car that entered the Bundaran HI pool for three months.
“So the person in question is an online taxi driver. The vehicle’s speed at the time of impact was around 60-70 kilometres per hour,” Ojo explained.
Ojo showed a photo after the car entered the pool. The car was almost fully submerged, with only the roof visible above the water surface.
