Jakarta, Kompas.com – Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has introduced its latest battery technology, the second-generation Blade Battery, alongside its Flash Charging rapid-charging solution.

The technology is claimed to address several key challenges facing electric vehicles, from charging speed to performance degradation in cold temperatures.

Eagle Zhao, President Director of PT BYD Motor Indonesia, stated that the second-generation Blade Battery has undergone rigorous safety testing.

“The second-generation Blade Battery has been put through various demanding tests, including under-body impact testing. In these tests, the new battery was able to withstand impacts of up to 1,500 joules on the vehicle’s underside, approximately 10 times higher than the applicable national standards,” said Eagle in central Jakarta on Monday, 9 March 2026.

BYD claims the innovation has set new records in charging speed.

Electric vehicles using this technology can charge from 10 per cent to 70 per cent in approximately five minutes.

To reach 97 per cent capacity, charging requires approximately nine minutes.

Furthermore, charging performance remains stable even under extreme temperature conditions.

Even at temperatures of minus 30 degrees Celsius, the charging process from 20 to 97 per cent takes only approximately three minutes longer than under normal temperature conditions.

The second-generation Blade Battery was developed through six years of research and development.

The technology is designed to deliver a charging experience approaching the refuelling speed of conventional vehicles.

In conventional battery technology, fast charging speed and high energy density are often considered difficult to achieve simultaneously.

However, BYD claims to have overcome this challenge by increasing battery energy density by approximately 5 per cent compared to the previous generation, whilst delivering significantly faster charging.

The technology is also supported by BYD’s heat management system, namely the Lithium-Ion High-Speed Channel and the Full-Spectrum Intelligent Thermal Management System.
