The Indonesian Waqf Board (BWI), in synergy with Commission VIII of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), has officially launched an innovative cash waqf programme called Wakaf Legislator Indonesia (WALI). The nationwide launch took place at the Parliament Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday, 30 June 2026, as a strategic move to optimise the potential of cash waqf among policymakers for the benefit of the wider community.

Chairman of Commission VIII DPR RI, Marwan Dasopang, stated that the WALI programme is specifically designed to accommodate legislators who wish to make a tangible, sustainable contribution beyond their supervisory and legislative functions. The cash waqf funds collected through this programme will be managed productively and transparently by BWI as the national nazhir.

“The presence of the WALI programme is a historic moment where people’s representatives not only fight for aspirations through regulation but also lead by example through this enduring Islamic financial instrument. We hope this movement will ignite a strengthening of the people’s economy,” Marwan said at the Parliament Complex on Monday.

Chairman of BWI, Kamaruddin Amin, expressed his highest appreciation for the commitment shown by Commission VIII. He emphasised that cash waqf possesses extraordinary flexibility because the principal value is preserved and developed, while only the investment returns are channelled into social programmes.

“This collaboration is expected to become a role model for other high state institutions. If the legislators are moving, we are optimistic that public literacy and participation in cash waqf in Indonesia will leap significantly,” Kamaruddin stated.

During the launch, Commission VIII demonstrated its concrete commitment to the National Waqf Movement by making a cash waqf contribution of Rp 100 million. This contribution serves as a symbolic start to a charitable movement that is expected to grow continuously and inspire the public to participate in sustainable waqf. The event concluded with the symbolic handover of the cash waqf pledge deed from DPR RI representatives to BWI.
