Buzz Over Rumours of Sheikh Ahmad Al Misry's Arrest in Egypt, But Indonesian Police Say It's Not True

Jakarta, VIVA – The whereabouts of Sheikh Ahmad Al Misry, the suspect in the alleged same-sex sexual harassment case, remain mysterious to this day. Police have confirmed that reports claiming Sheikh Ahmad has been arrested and is being returned to Indonesia are untrue. Polri’s International Relations Division (Hubinter) stated that Egyptian authorities are currently searching for the precise location of Sheikh Ahmad, who is believed to be hiding in one of the regions in Egypt. “The response was given over the phone that they (Egyptian authorities) are currently seeking the exact position of the individual in which province,” said the Secretary of NCB Hubinter Polri, Brigadier General of Police Untung Widyatmoko, to reporters on Thursday, 14 May 2026. Untung emphasised that Sheikh Ahmad has not been arrested as of now and is still in Egypt. “That information is not true. The individual SAM is still in Egypt,” he stated. According to him, Egyptian authorities have also not yet provided an official response regarding the request from Indonesian investigators to assist in examining Sheikh Ahmad. This is because the individual is said to hold dual citizenship, Indonesian and Egyptian. “The Egyptian authorities have not yet given an official response regarding our request to accommodate the examination of the individual as per the investigators’ request,” he said. Previously, it was reported that the alleged sexual harassment case involving the figure named Sheikh Ahmad Al Misry has come back into the spotlight after news of his arrest emerged. The man, known by his real name Ahmed Abdel Wakeel, is said to have been secured by police in Egypt after becoming a fugitive in the case that has been sensationalising social media in recent times. This information was first shared by Hanny Kristianto via a post on his personal Instagram. Hanny is known as one of the parties actively following the case since it first became widely discussed. In his statement, Hanny confirmed that the suspect is now undergoing escort procedures to be returned to Indonesia to face further legal proceedings. “Already arrested by police in Egypt,” said Hanny Kristianto on Instagram, quoted on Wednesday, 13 May 2026. This arrest immediately sparked widespread attention from netizens. The case involving Sheikh Ahmad Al Misry has indeed been one of the matters that has captured the most attention so far because the modus operandi used against the victims is considered highly distressing.
