Buya Syafii Maarif's Ideas Still Relevant for Strengthening National Unity
MAARIF Institute emphasises the importance of nurturing national, humanitarian, and civil values amid Indonesia’s challenges as a diverse nation. This effort is being carried out through commemorations of the birth anniversary and fourth anniversary of the passing of national figure Ahmad Syafii Maarif, known as Buya Syafii.
From May to June 2026, MAARIF Institute is organising the Buya Month events across various regions to preserve and develop his intellectual legacy. Executive Director Andar Nubowo said the commemorations are a crucial moment to revive Buya Syafii’s ideas amidst evolving national life dynamics. “A reflective moment that touches the emotional and intellectual aspects of the audience before the main event is the session re-reading Buya Syafii Maarif’s public lecture,” he said, quoted on Monday, 1 June 2026.
According to Nubowo, Buya Syafii’s ideas remain relevant as a reference for strengthening national unity and maintaining diverse community life. One form of reflection involves re-reading his public lecture delivered at the Indonesian Institute of Arts (ISI) Padang Panjang on 16 March 2015, to be understood and contemplated by the current generation.
Meanwhile, Buya Month Implementation Manager Akbar Nicholas stated that selecting West Sumatra as one of the event locations holds special significance. Not only is it Buya Syafii’s birthplace, but the region also has deep roots in the nation’s intellectual and cultural traditions. “Choosing Ranah Minang as the second hub among three cities carries a profound message. The free and open cultural performances are not merely entertainment but an invitation to reflect together amidst the challenges of the times,” Nicholas added.
He added that Buya Syafii’s moral exemplars and values must be continuously upheld as part of efforts to preserve national unity. Through various cultural mediums, MAARIF Institute aims to reintroduce Buya Syafii Maarif’s ideas to the public, especially the youth, to strengthen awareness of the importance of tolerance, humanity, and civility in national life.
