Buya Anwar Urges DPR to Draft Law Banning LGBT
Central Board Chairman of Muhammadiyah, Anwar Abbas, has urged the government and the House of Representatives (DPR) to immediately draft a law regulating the prohibition of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) practices. According to him, such regulation is necessary given that LGBT is considered contrary to religious values and Pancasila.
Buya Anwar, as he is affectionately known, linked his view to President Prabowo Subianto’s stance, which has designated the spread of LGBT culture as a form of non-military threat to state protection. “Lately, the LGBT group appears increasingly aggressive and open in showing themselves. This is certainly very dangerous for the future of the nation and state, so President Prabowo himself has concluded that the presence of LGBT for our nation and state has become a non-military threat,” Buya Anwar said in a written statement received by Republika on Thursday (9/6/2026).
He argued that LGBT practices not only contradict religious teachings and national culture but are also considered to potentially impact the future of national life. Therefore, he asked the government and the DPR to immediately discuss regulations specifically governing the prohibition of LGBT. “For that reason, we hope that the government and DPR can create a law on the prohibition of LGBT as soon as possible,” he said.
He assessed that this step is in line with the state ideology of Pancasila and the mandate of Article 29 paragraph (1) of the 1945 Constitution, which states that the state is based on the belief in the One Almighty God. Buya Anwar also mentioned that the six religions recognised by the state do not justify LGBT practices.
According to Buya Anwar, if the policy receives responses from various parties, it is a consequence that must be faced. He argued that the government still needs to prioritise the interests of the nation and state in formulating policy. Buya Anwar also touched on a number of countries that have implemented restrictions on LGBT activities. He hopes the government and DPR will have a firm stance in formulating policies related to this issue.
Additionally, he invited the public to support the steps of the government and DPR if discussions on LGBT regulations are carried out. According to him, the drafting of the law is important as a form of implementing values he believes are in accordance with Pancasila and religious teachings. “Our task now is to encourage the DPR and support the stance and views of President Prabowo so that a law on the prohibition of LGBT will soon exist in this Pancasila nation we all love, because none of us wants our children and grandchildren to become LGBT,” he said.
