TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Forestry Ministry has received many complaints from forest-related business people about the long time it takes to issue licenses. Forestry Minister, Zulkifli Hasan, said the complaints have come from palm oil and mining business people. “There are many overlapping regulations between the central and the regional governments,” said Zulkifli in Jakarta yesterday.

The slowness in issuing the licenses is caused by the many layers of bureaucracy as a result of the regional autonomy. Business people must submit a permit to all executives of the province: the regent, the governor and then to the Forestry Minister. “Mining companies are required to have a 150-day environmental impact analysis for mine and each of the government unit takes years to issue a permit,” said Zulkifli.
