Businesses Need Regulatory Certainty More Than Relaxation, Says LPPOM

Business operators need regulatory certainty regarding halal product assurance more than they need frequently changing relaxation policies, an official has stated. Clear rules are necessary so that businesses can formulate investment plans and fulfil halal certification obligations in a more measured manner.

LPPOM President Director Muti Arintinawati said that business operators do not fundamentally object to halal certification requirements. What they require most is clear and consistent regulation to avoid uncertainty in running their businesses.

“Business operators actually have no issue with the halal certification obligation. What they need is regulatory certainty. The rules should not keep changing or be subject to continuous relaxation, because that confuses them when drawing up business plans,” Muti said during the Islamic Finance Dialogue, part of the Indonesia Sharia Forum (ISF) 2026 in Jakarta, on Wednesday.

Muti explained that regulatory certainty is also crucial for maintaining consumer trust in the halal product assurance system. She argued that halal certification should not be viewed merely as an administrative requirement, but rather as an instrument to safeguard the integrity of products circulating in the community.

She added that business operators must understand that implementing a halal assurance system does not end once a certificate is obtained. Consistency in carrying out production processes according to halal standards is a key factor in preserving consumer trust.

“Simply chasing the certificate is not enough. What is more important is how the halal assurance system is implemented consistently so that consumer trust is maintained,” she said.

Muti also reminded that halal certification covers the entire production chain, from the use of raw materials, processing, storage, to product distribution. All these stages must comply with halal requirements to maintain product quality and integrity.

According to Muti, regulatory certainty and consistent application of halal standards will strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesian products in the global market. In addition to boosting domestic consumer confidence, this can also expand export opportunities for halal products to various countries.
