Business World Pushes for Biodiversity Recovery in Urban Areas
The shrinkage of green spaces and the decline in biodiversity in urban areas have become increasingly evident challenges. This situation is driving involvement from various sectors, including business actors, to help build community-based environmental recovery models.
One initiative is being carried out through the urban biodiversity programme at Rumah Deret Tamansari in Bandung. The programme is run by The Body Shop Indonesia in partnership with Yayasan Tunas Nusa and Kelompok Tani Milenial RDTS.
The programme includes planting more than 50 types of plants and trees to strengthen urban green spaces.
In addition, the programme involves more than 50 young people and women in environmental management. Development is carried out through the concept of rooftop gardens, vertical gardens, and micro food forests as solutions for limited space in urban areas.
This step is taken to respond to the decline in biodiversity while also improving air quality in metropolitan regions. The community-based approach is considered key to ensuring that environmental recovery efforts can proceed sustainably.
Head of Marketing & Digital at The Body Shop Indonesia, Nimas Chrisensia, stated that the company positions nature as something that needs to be protected and restored. “Through the spirit of ‘Empowered by Nature’, we want to reinforce our identity not only by bringing products from nature but also by returning benefits to nature and building closer connections with the community,” she said in a press release on Saturday (1/5/2026).
On the other hand, the company is also relaunching an old product as part of a strategy to maintain ties with consumers. “Dewberry is not just a product, but part of the memory for many of our customers since the 90s. We want to bring back that emotional closeness, while also bringing new energy for the current generation,” said Nimas.
The integration of business and environmental agendas is expected to increasingly become the new standard. Efforts to recover biodiversity in urban areas are becoming one of the important indicators in assessing the sustainability of industrial activities.
