Business tycoons' role in reform

Business tycoons' role in reform

From Pikiran Rakyat

In these hectic days of reform trends, we have nearly
forgotten the business tycoons. If we ponder on the two words
reform and tycoons, they are very meaningful to the monetary and
economic crisis.

The most important reform is the endeavor of the cabinet to
immediately reduce and stabilize commodity prices, especially
those of staple foods.

In the monetary crisis, the active involvement of business
tycoons is required to lighten the increasingly heavy burden
borne by the government. For many years, the government has
played a big role in promoting the companies of tycoons, although
the participation may smell of corruption, collusion and
nepotism.

If the business tycoons could take a wise and responsible
stance as good citizens, they could solve the crisis together
with the government in order to stabilize the economy.

They could invest their capital and distribute staple foods to
people in need of these goods.

Part of their companies' profits could be turned into
subsidies, if necessary, for the reform struggle. The companies'
assets could be donated to the state or managed by the government
into state-owned companies in order to reduce the government's
burden. It is our hope that the government can soon reestablish
the Indonesian economy.
