Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) has released a transport movement map for the 2026 Eid holiday exodus, identifying numerous critical transport hubs predicted to experience the heaviest congestion, spanning railway stations, airports, and ferry ports.

For rail transport, AHY stated that passenger movement is expected to concentrate towards Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Regarding departures, Jakarta stations remain the most dominant points, particularly Pasar Senen and Gambir stations, whilst West Java stations including Bekasi, Cikarang, and Bandung will also experience significant traffic.

“For destinations, generally in Central Java from Solo Balapan, Lempuyangan, Purwokerto, and Kutoarjo. Then in DIY Province at Tugu Station and Lempuyangan,” AHY said at a press conference at the Bina Graha building in Central Jakarta on Wednesday, 11 March 2026.

Beyond rail, the government is also monitoring air transport readiness. AHY stated that aircraft passenger movement is expected to be dominated by flows from Soekarno-Hatta Airport to various Indonesian cities, particularly for inter-island travel.

“We hope the weather will also be favourable so it does not unduly disrupt the on-time performance of the aircraft to be utilised,” he said.

Maritime transport represents another critical transport hub with millions of passengers expected to move. Ocean vessels are anticipated to be heavily used by passengers travelling to eastern Indonesian regions, including Sulawesi, Maluku, and Nusa Tenggara.

“Regarding seaports, these are also essential because we must serve millions of citizens who can use ocean vessels to return to various regions, particularly towards eastern Indonesia, Sulawesi, and naturally also Maluku and Nusa Tenggara,” he said.

For inter-island ferry crossings, AHY highlighted the Merak-Bakauheni route as the most congested point, as it serves as the primary link between Java and Sumatra. The government has prepared several strategies to address potential congestion in port areas, including establishing buffer zones and implementing delay systems to regulate vehicle flow and prevent vehicle buildup.

“For example, by preparing buffer zones at rest areas, giving priority to passengers who arrive earlier and hold tickets, whilst others use a system called the delaying system. We will also ensure better management. We will ensure this for both origin and destination ferry crossings, including those in East Java,” he said.
