Bush calls Megawati over Bali bombing
Bush calls Megawati over Bali bombing
Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri told President
George W. Bush she would seek "swift and decisive" action against
terrorists who bombed a Bali nightclub, killing 183 people, the
White House said.
Her 20-minute conversation with the president on Thursday came
three days after Bush had expressed impatience with Megawati's
anti-terrorism efforts.
White House spokesman Scott McClellan, accompanying Bush on a
political trip to the South, said the president called Megawati
to express his condolences to the victims of the bombing and
renew America's offer for assistance and support.
"The two leaders agreed the Bali bombing required a swift and
decisive response. They agreed to work with other governments,
including Australia, to bring the perpetrators to justice,"
McClellan told reporters in Atlanta, Georgia.
Though it was unclear whether the call eased Bush's concerns,
the spokesman said, "The latest indications from Indonesia are
that they are taking steps to combat terrorism."
Bush plans to discuss the case with Megawati during the Asian
Pacific Economic Conference in Mexico next week. -- AP
