Busan or Pusan? Take your pick

BUSAN, South Korea: Want information about the Busan Asian Games? Check www.busanasiangames.org or www.pusanasiad.org.

Confusion over the name of South Korea's second-largest city, spelled Pusan for decades, remains after the nation's abrupt change in rules for English spelling last year. The change made it Busan.

Following the Asian Games, the city will serve as host to the 8th Busan Far East and South Pacific Games for the disabled later this month and the 7th Pusan International Film Festival in November.

"Sometimes I get questions like 'How far is Busan from Pusan?"' said Steve Tang, special adviser at Busan City for international investment affairs.

"What can we do? It's the central government's decision," Tang said.

He said the change not only cost millions of dollars, but was a "big hassle" for the city, which handles nearly eight million 6-meter (20-foot) -long containers annually as the world's third- largest shipping port.--AP
