As I went home by bus, a Bekasi-Jakarta air-conditioned
limited express, I sat on the only vacant seat beside the driver
and found myself cautioned for trespass before I could feel
relieved about catching the bus.

The driver harshly told me to rise and stand because the seat
had been leased on a monthly basis to a passenger, who would soon
get on the bus at Rawamangun, East Jakarta.

The experience has made me wonder whether city bus seats can
be chartered. That particular seat said to have been leased is
usually used by a conductor. If seat-leasing is allowed, are
passengers boarding after the lessee has left allowed to occupy
them?
