Bus falls into river

JAKARTA (JP): A bus plying the Kampung Rambutan-Kota route plunged into the Ciliwung river which separates Jl. Gajah Mada and Jl. Hayam Wuruk in Central Jakarta on Friday night. No fatalities were reported.

The bus with 20 passengers aboard careered into the river in front of the Central Jakarta Prosecutor's Office. Injured passengers took shelter in the office.

A passenger said the bus driver lost control of the bus after he turned to avoid a heap of soil left on the road after Thursday's rioting.

He said the bus hit a concrete kerb which divides lanes on the road before hitting a sidewalk bordering the river and plunging in.

Injured passengers were assisted by Armed Forces officers who were on duty in the area, Antara reported.

The driver and his assistant were questioned at a nearby police subprecinct, witnesses said. (jun)
