Bus driver arrested for fatal crash

BOGOR: The Bogor Police arrested a bus driver for allegedly causing a fatal chain accident involving more than 16 vehicles.

The head of the traffic police, Adj. Comr. Lamazi, said Wely, 50, a driver for the Benteng Jaya bus company, was arrested at his parents' house in Kopo, Bandung.

On Saturday evening, Wely reportedly lost control of his bus, which was carrying 40 students, while driving along the main road of Puncak, Cisarua, in heavy traffic.

Two people were killed in the resulting pileup, which involved 16 cars and several motorcycles.

Wely told the police he lost control of the bus because the brakes failed.

He was driving one of three buses chartered by a junior high school for a trip to the Cipanas holiday resort.

After the accident, the 40 students on Wely's bus moved to the other two buses and continued their trip.--JP
