Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Secretary-General of PDI Perjuangan, Hasto Kristiyanto, has highlighted the social criticism contained within the film ‘Ghost in the Cell’, directed by Joko Anwar, as part of the 2026 Bung Karno Month celebrations. Speaking after a public screening in Jakarta on Sunday, Hasto stated that the film, which has been acquired by 148 countries, depicts the spirit of struggle of the Proclamator, Soekarno, against capitalism and imperialism. “The film reveals how Bung Karno resisted capitalism and imperialism, which always present a new face but are fundamentally driven by greed,” Hasto said. He noted that Joko Anwar intelligently conveys criticism of state governance driven by avarice through the character Prakasa Kitabuming, played by Arswendy Bening Swara. “There is a businessman so greedy that even when imprisoned for corruption, this character, Prakasa Kitabuming, continues to enjoy extraordinary luxury,” he added. Hasto also pointed out the symbolic significance behind the character, noting his origins in Solo and his registration number, 2106 1961. “Despite the horror elements, it illustrates what happens when a country is not well-managed. The social and political criticisms presented in the film regarding national life are possible realities,” Hasto remarked. He expressed hope that the film would inspire the public and stakeholders to build a better civilisation through the spirit of ‘gotong royong’ (mutual cooperation). Ganjar, also present at the event, remarked that the satire is quite sharp and that the film’s message effectively conveys the current state of the republic. He added that Bung Karno Month serves as a momentum to listen to public concerns expressed through the medium of art. The screening of ‘Ghost in the Cell’ was organised by the National Cultural Body (BKN) of PDI Perjuangan to appreciate national creative works and maintain the flame of Sukarno’s thoughts. Once Mekel, Chairman of the BKN PDI Perjuangan, explained that the film was selected for its critical expression and excellent cinematography and screenplay, stating, “This space for expression is vital for us.”
