Bundaran HI Underground Space Project Spanning Over 4,000 Square Metres to Be Completed Next Year
Construction of the multifunctional underground space, or extended concourse, in the Bundaran Hotel Indonesia (HI) area of Jakarta has reached 24 per cent progress as of August 2026. The project, which carries a budget of Rp148.2 billion, is targeted for completion in June 2027.
The 4,439 square metre underground space is being built by PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda) through its subsidiary, PT Integrasi Transit Jakarta (ITJ). Completion of the project is expected to coincide with the 500th anniversary of DKI Jakarta.
“The target is for this to be a gift for Jakarta’s five centuries and it will be inaugurated during the Jakarta anniversary celebrations,” said PT ITJ President Director Ferdiansyah Roestam in Jakarta on Tuesday (25/8).
Ferdiansyah said the construction of the extended concourse presents its own challenges because the project is the first underground space development undertaken in Indonesia. This condition means the developer has no directly comparable project to use as a reference.
According to him, the success of this first project can later serve as a basis for developing extended concourses at other locations in Jakarta.
“We have to read the building development map in the Bundaran HI area and also read the underground cable map and a number of other things,” said Ferdiansyah.
The multifunctional underground space is designed with two main access points connected to buildings around Bundaran HI.
The first access will be directly connected to Plaza Indonesia and Grand Hyatt. Meanwhile, the other access is designed to connect with Wisma Nusantara and Hotel Pullman.
In addition, the extended concourse will be integrated with the Bundaran HI Transjakarta bus stop through lift facilities. This integration allows Transjakarta users to access the underground space while continuing their journey to the Jakarta MRT station.
“So later Transjakarta users can access the extended concourse directly and connect with the Jakarta MRT station,” said Ferdiansyah.
Ferdiansyah explained that the multifunctional space is being built at a depth of approximately 18 metres below the road surface in the Bundaran HI area. Besides being part of transport integration, the location is projected as a new meeting space for the people of Jakarta.
“This Extended Concourse is also a solution for people crossing from the east side to the west and vice versa. The public can also enjoy this area as a transit venue that certainly drives the economy,” he said.
After construction is completed, PT ITJ estimates that the number of visitors to the area could increase by up to 6,000 people. The presence of this underground multifunctional space is expected to help enliven the Bundaran HI Transit Oriented Development (TOD) area.
“We hope to improve the comfort of public transport users while strengthening connectivity in Jakarta’s central business district,” he said.
