Bumi Manusia Extended Film: A Centenary Gift for Pramoedya Ananta Toer
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Falcon Pictures, via the KlikFilm OTT platform, has revived Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s masterpiece Bumi Manusia. This is done through a format that may have long been the dream of its loyal readers: Bumi Manusia Extended. This version is more than a technically longer film. Bumi Manusia Extended seeks to provide room for scenes that, over the last seven years, have been tightly kept in the editing room. Premiering in six parts, the film will greet audiences on Thursday, 5 March 2026, and will be shown every Monday and Thursday. The extended edition’s timing is considered highly fitting. KlikFilm director Frederica said the project is a special gift to commemorate the centenary of the literary maestro’s birth. According to her, a work as expansive as Bumi Manusia has a spirit that is too wide to be confined by the narrow duration of cinema. ‘In celebrating Pram, we want to release the Bumi Manusia Extended film. We will split it into six parts. Thanks to the family for granting permission,’ Frederica said on Wednesday, 4 March 2026. For her, the release is a commitment to presenting quality viewing that goes beyond mere entertainment. ‘We believe a work as grand as Bumi Manusia has a soul that cannot be adequately conveyed in a single format. As Lebaran approaches, we want to offer programming that is not only entertaining but also spiritually enriching,’ she said. Looking back to seven years ago when Bumi Manusia first hit cinemas, there was much discussion among readers of the novel. Many felt the film focused too much on the romance of Minke and Annelies, while the social-political layers and the intellectual struggle underpinning the novel seemed swept away by the pace.
