Bulog sticks with import plan
JAKARTA (JP): The state logistic agency (Bulog) will not cancel existing rice import contracts although domestic rice production this year is expected to exceed last year's quota, according to Minister of Trade and Industry Rahardi Ramelan.
"Bulog will not cancel its rice import contracts," Rahardi, who is also chairman of Bulog, told Antara on Friday.
Bulog has a total import commitment of 4.6 million tons of rice for the 1998/1999 fiscal year ending in March, of which 3.9 million tons has been delivered.
Imports continue because domestic unhusked rice production in 1998 dropped drastically to 46.4 million tons from 52.2 million tons in 1997. (rei)
