Bulog Controls 15% of National Rice, Even Making History by Renting Warehouses
Karawang, CNBC Indonesia - Agriculture Minister/Head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas) Amran Sulaiman has revealed that the government’s rice reserve (CBP) position is increasingly strong. With stocks exceeding 5 million tonnes, Perum Bulog is said to control around 15% of the total national rice production.
“If our production is 34 million tonnes, (that means) 5 million tonnes (controlled by Bulog) is 15 percent (of national rice production),” Amran stated when met in Karawang, West Java, on Thursday (23/4/2026).
Amran emphasised that this stock figure marks a new historical milestone in CBP management. As of the morning of 23 April 2026, the total national rice stock was recorded at more than 5 million tonnes.
“Today, 23 April 2026, at 8.55 (WIB), the rice stock across Indonesia is 5,000,198 tonnes. This has never happened throughout history. This is the first time. This is the result of all our hard work,” he said.
This surge in stocks has also impacted storage capacity needs. The government has even had to rent additional private warehouses in various regions to accommodate the continuously increasing rice.
“We are at the warehouse… this is a rented warehouse, the total capacity here alone, in the Karawang area and surroundings, we have rented (to store) 102,000 tonnes, which is already filled with 80,000 tonnes, possibly in the next two weeks it will be full again,” Amran explained.
Nationally, Bulog’s warehouse capacity, which was originally around 3 million tonnes, has now been strengthened with additional rentals of up to millions of tonnes.
“We have rented warehouses across Indonesia for 2 million tonnes. Our Bulog warehouse capacity is only 3 million tonnes, now we have rented 2 million tonnes, now it’s full, with 800,000 tonnes left, and we have rented again approximately 1 million tonnes capacity. That means later 6 million tonnes,” he elaborated.
With the abundant stock conditions, Amran is optimistic that Indonesia will not need to import rice, at least in the near term.
“Alhamdulillah, we did not import in 2025, Insyaallah no imports in 2026. We pray for each other, we collaborate, Insyaallah no rice imports in 2026. Our reserves are the highest in history for April,” he concluded.
