Bulog Adopts BRIN Technology to Store Rice for Up to Two Years
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Perum Bulog will adopt technology resulting from research by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to improve the quality of rice storage in new warehouses.
Perum Bulog’s President Director, Ahmad Rizal Ramdhani, stated that the technology enables rice to be stored for around two years without using chemicals.
“That technology can maintain rice in the warehouse for almost two years without needing fumigation or anything else,” said Ahmad after a limited coordination meeting at the Coordinating Ministry for Food, Jakarta, on Wednesday.
He explained that the technology was developed through collaboration between Bulog and BRIN, which has been ongoing for the past few months.
According to him, the use of this technology will make the stored rice healthier and more hygienic.
“Thus, the rice will be even healthier, more hygienic, and more suitable for consumption because it does not use chemical mixtures,” he said.
Ahmad stated that the technology will be implemented gradually in the new warehouses being prepared by the government.
“We will do it gradually, with the hope that eventually all 100 sites can be covered,” he said.
In addition to new warehouses, Bulog also plans to renovate old warehouses with similar technology to improve the quality of national rice storage.
He views this innovation as a product of the nation’s children that needs to be optimised to support national food security.
“This potential is a creation of Indonesia’s own people; we must realise it,” Ahmad remarked.
Previously, Perum Bulog stated that 100 post-harvest infrastructure development sites have been finalised by the government as part of strengthening national food security.
He mentioned that the designation covers all planning stages, including feasibility studies and technical considerations in each region.
The infrastructure development is carried out using a region-typology-based approach to match the potential commodities in the areas, including providing warehouses in island regions and processing facilities in food production centres.
This post-harvest infrastructure strengthening initiative is part of the government’s efforts to increase the efficiency of agricultural produce handling while maintaining the stability of the national food supply.
