Bulgaria Wins Eurovision 2026 with Dara's 'Bangaranga'
Bulgaria emerged victorious at the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 with Dara winning through her song ‘Bangaranga’. This victory marks the first time for the 27-year-old singer and Bulgaria after participating in the competition since 2005, having missed the last three editions.
Dara describes ‘Bangaranga’ as “pop music with a folk tale backbone.” The upbeat party anthem is inspired by kukeri, an ancient Bulgarian ritual where men wear furry costumes, bells, and animal masks to roam villages.
Regarding the meaning of her song title that sparked curiosity among viewers, Dara explained, “Bangaranga is the special energy that everyone has inside them, a feeling that anything is possible.”
Bulgaria’s surprising win also brings relief to the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and other participating television stations. Had Israel, which finished second, won, the organizers would have faced a complicated situation in determining the host location for the 2027 edition.
The 70th edition of this major music event was held at Wiener Stadthalle, Vienna, Austria, after Austrian opera contestant JJ won last year. Approximately 10,000 spectators watched live at the venue, with an estimated global television audience of over 100 million people.
The final round featured musical performances from 25 countries, including the return of Bulgaria, Moldova, and Romania. However, this anniversary celebration was marked by a boycott from five countries: Ireland, Spain, Netherlands, Slovenia, and Iceland, who refused to participate in protest against the participation of Israeli broadcaster Kan amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Additionally, about 2,000 people held protests in downtown Vienna against Israel’s participation.
In the competition, Israel’s representative, Michelle, performing a romantic pop song about toxic relationships with Noam Bettan, had to settle for second place after receiving strong public votes.
On the other hand, the United Kingdom had to accept finishing last through Look Mum No Computer or Sam Battle, who performed ‘Eins, Zwei, Drei’, which received zero points in the public vote. Similar results with no public points were also obtained by Belgium and Germany. Meanwhile, Australia’s representative, sung by Delta Goodrem, managed to finish fourth. (The Guardian/Z-2)
