Building collapses injuring workers

JAKARTA: A shop-house under construction in Sunter, North Jakarta, collapsed on Monday at around 3 p.m., injuring at least a dozen construction workers.

The building collapsed when the workers were trying to fill in a column with cement for the third story of the building.

"The column was probably not strong enough so it collapsed," Sunter Agung subdistrict chief Haryadi was quoted as saying by detikcom.

As of 6:30 p.m., seven workers were still trapped under the debris. Sunter Police officers were deployed to remove the workers from the rubble.

The injured workers were sent to Sunter Agung Hospital and Medika Griya Hospital for medical treatment.

The police are still investigating the case. -- JP
