One of the buildings at SDN 3 Sembung Gede in Banjar Sembung Kumpi, Kerambitan Subdistrict, Tabanan, Bali, collapsed after being battered by heavy rain. The building is known to be nearly half a century old.

The headmaster of SDN 3 Sembung Gede, Pande Komang Juni Arsana, revealed that the building collapsed around 07:45 WITA on Thursday (30/4). According to him, the building was constructed in 1980. Over that period, the building had undergone only one repair to the ceiling.

“Initially, only one building was damaged, namely in Class V. Gradually, it spread to the other buildings. The heavy rain then caused the walls to weaken and collapse,” said Juni Arsana on Friday (1/5/2026).

Juni Arsana stated that the collapsed building consisted of three classrooms for Classes IV, V, and VI, as well as one school health unit (UKS) room. He confirmed that there were no casualties in the incident. However, he expressed concern about potential follow-up incidents, given that student activities are still ongoing.

“For now, we have put up raffia ropes to prevent students, teachers, and staff from entering the area,” he added.

Juni Arsana has prepared mitigation steps to ensure that the teaching and learning process continues. Students from Classes IV, V, and VI will be moved to the rooms of Classes I, II, and III. The school also plans to borrow the Banjar Mandung community hall for emergency classes.

“Based on agreements with the school committee, parents, and the Education Office, Classes I, II, and III will temporarily be moved to the Banjar Mandung community hall,” he added.

According to Juni Arsana, the school building damage had actually been proposed for repairs through the Basic Education Data (Dapodik). However, the building collapsed first while waiting for the aid to be realised.

The Tabanan Regency Government (Pemkab Tabanan) is reportedly aware of the condition at SDN 3 Sembung Gede. In fact, Deputy Regent of Tabanan, I Made Dirga, has already visited the site.

The Head of the Primary School Division of the Tabanan Education Office, I Made Sukanitra, revealed that SDN 3 Sembung Gede has been included in this year’s revitalisation proposals. He stated that SDN 3 Sembung Gede is ranked 14th out of a total of 62 proposals for damaged primary schools in Tabanan.

“We hope it can enter the priority list for repairs this year,” said Sukanitra.
