Building a Sustainable Ecosystem: Japfa's CSR Impacts Child Nutrition, Farmers, and the Environment
In the midst of growing demands for sustainable business practices, PT Japfa Comfeed Indonesia Tbk (IDX: JPFA) is strengthening its corporate social responsibility (CSR) role as an integral part of its business strategy.
More than mere philanthropic activities, the company directs its CSR programmes as instruments for creating shared value (CSV) that target measurable economic, social, and environmental aspects.
Known as one of Indonesia’s largest animal protein producers, the company integrates a sustainability approach from upstream to downstream in its business—from animal feed, breeding, farming, to consumer products.
“The theme we are highlighting is ‘Growing Towards Shared Prosperity.’ This forms the basic principle of our business as a protein source provider, while ensuring sustainability for society,” stated Argha Akbar, Social Investment Senior Officer at PT Japfa Comfeed Indonesia Tbk, during his presentation at the TOP CSR Awards 2026.
Japfa was once again selected as a winner at the TOP CSR Awards 2026. It participated in the judging process organised by TopBusiness Magazine on Thursday (30/4/2026) online. Argha was present alongside Zuhad Dzulfikar as Data Analyst.
CSR as Part of Sustainable Business Strategy
Japfa emphasises that the transformation towards sustainable business is not only carried out through operations but also through organisational governance. The company has established a sustainability committee directly led by the board of directors, ensuring that every policy and programme implementation aligns with ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) principles.
In recent years, particularly post-COVID-19 pandemic, the focus on ESG has been further strengthened, including in relation to sustainability-linked loan schemes that require achieving certain sustainability indicators.
From an investment perspective, the company allocated nearly Rp500 billion for various sustainability initiatives, from renewable energy, farm biosecurity, to environmental programmes. Precisely Rp466.9 billion for total sustainability investments in 2025.
Meanwhile, for its CSR programmes specifically, Japfa disbursed around Rp41 billion throughout last year.
“This value reflects our commitment to supporting social and environmental activities, even though many of our programmes do not require large investments but have broad impacts,” explained Argha.
Three Main Pillars of CSR
Japfa’s CSR strategy is built on three main pillars: first, community empowerment and partnerships; second, health and nutrition; and third, education and capacity development.
- Community Empowerment and Partnerships
As a company developing a farming partnership model (plasma), Japfa positions farmers as strategic partners, not merely small business actors.
The company routinely provides training on farm management, housing management, and production standards to maintain product quality up to the end consumer.
This approach not only enhances farmers’ capacities but also creates an inclusive and sustainable business ecosystem in various regions.
- Health and Nutrition: Japfa for Kids Programme
One of Japfa’s flagship CSR programmes is Japfa for Kids, which focuses on improving child nutrition through additional protein provision and nutrition education.
The programme shows significant development:
2024: reaching 14,000 students
2025: increasing to 15,000 students
2026 target: reaching 16,000 students
“So this programme is more than just aid distribution. In fact, the Japfa for Kids programme has evolved into ongoing mentoring for six months, involving students, parents, and teachers. The target increases by 1,000 participants each year,” he said.
The results are quite significant. In 2025, the programme successfully changed 62.5% of children from the undernourished category to normal nutrition.
“After COVID-19, we no longer just conduct ceremonial activities, but focus on long-term mentoring so the impact is more tangible,” Argha revealed.
In addition, Japfa also runs the Zero Stunting programme in several regions, including the Riau Islands, in response to local government needs.
- Education and Capacity Development
On the internal side, Japfa develops various employee training programmes through a digital system and a special training centre in Bogor.
The company also encourages innovation through:
Digital learning platform
Japfa Sustainability Initiative Awards
Employee innovation programme
This approach ensures every employee has a clear development curriculum, while supporting sustainable business transformation.
Environmental Transformation and Green Operations
Japfa also demonstrates strong commitment to environmental aspects, with ambitious targets to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Some key achievements and initiatives include:
Conversion of coal usage by up to 75% to biomass (palm kernel shells)
Target of 0% coal usage in the future
36% of energy from biomass sources
Operational efficiency up to 10%
In addition, the company develops a data-based reporting system through the Japfa Sustainability Report System, enabling real-time monitoring of: energy consumption, water usage, waste management, and emissions.
“For water usage, we recycle 395 megaliters (2025) with 9 water recycling facilities operating fully,” he said.
In waste management, Japfa also involves the community through: waste bank programmes, compost and eco-enzyme production, and plastic recycling.
“Our environmental programmes do not stand alone but involve surrounding communities so the benefits can be felt together,” Argha explained.
Social Initiatives: Child Protection and Women’s Empowerment
Japfa is also expanding its social focus through the development of
