Budi Arie apologises over 'early election' remarks controversy

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Projo chairman Budi Arie Setiadi has apologised over the controversy surrounding his statement speculating about the possibility of an early general election before 2029.

He understands that his statement gave rise to various speculations and misinterpretations. According to him, his remarks were merely his own personal statement and analysis.

“I, Budi Arie Setiadi, apologise to those who were displeased and uncomfortable with my statement,” Budi Arie said in a video recording received in Jakarta on Wednesday.

In addition, he stressed that the statement he made had no connection whatsoever with the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi). He therefore called on all parties to safeguard the unity and integrity of the Republic of Indonesia.

“I am ready to take responsibility and accept all consequences for my analysis and statement,” said the former Minister of Communication and Information.

Previously, a video recording circulated on social media showing Budi Arie speaking next to Jokowi about the possibility of political momentum and an election taking place sooner.

The statement drew public attention and sparked various speculations about the direction of national politics.

It was subsequently responded to by a number of politicians, including Gerindra Party spokesman Sugiat Santoso, who stressed that his party was unaffected by Budi Arie’s statement.

For Gerindra, according to him, securing and overseeing President Prabowo’s programmes is far more important than discussing the 2029 election. Moreover, he considered that discussing politics was still far too premature.

“Only Budi Arie himself knows what he meant, please ask the person concerned, we are not affected,” said the Deputy Chairman of Commission XIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives on Tuesday (25/8).
