Buddhists visit heroes' cemetery

Around 1,500 Buddhists from the Indonesian Buddha Niciren Syosyu (NSI) Council paid homage to the Kalibata heroes' cemetery on Sunday as part of the celebration of Waisak (Buddha Enlightenment Day).

"Similar visits (to other heroes' cemeteries in Indonesia) were simultaneously made by NSI members in 15 other provinces around the country," said Randy Arifin Porta, the chairman of the Jakarta Chapter of NSI.

On May 29 a group of Buddhists from the city, led by Randy, carried out voluntary work at the Kalibata heroes cemetery.

"Such activities, which are compulsory for NSI members, are part of Buddhists' expression of gratitude to the freedom fighters who have sacrificed their lives for our independence," Randy said. (03)
