The Year of Living Dangerously (METROTV, 8:05 p.m.) Starring Mel Gibson, Sigourney Weaver, Linda Hunt, Noel Ferrier, Kuh Ledesma. Directed by Peter Weir.
No, we don't have our own little fan club for Mr. Gibson (who we featured in the TV guide last week), but it's rather the relevance of the screen adaptation of C.J. Koch's novel, set in the then Djakarta on the brink of chaos in 1965. Journalist Guy Hamilton (Gibson) falls in love with a British diplomat (Weaver), but their torrid tropical romance takes a backseat to the novelty value of having Hunt play a male dwarf who befriends the two (she won an Oscar).
Despite being filmed in the Philippines, it's still deeply evocative, haunting (especially the score by Maurice Jarre) and makes captivating viewing. Look for Philippine singing diva Ledesma as the mysterious, rather ludicrously named secretary Tiger Lily.
