REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) has warned that cyber threats against the banking industry are continuing to evolve alongside the rapid digital transformation of the financial sector. As such, strengthening cybersecurity is considered a strategic necessity to maintain financial stability and public trust.

This was conveyed during the signing of a memorandum of understanding between BSSN and the Association of Regional Development Banks (Asbanda) regarding the enhancement of cybersecurity in the regional banking sector.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by the Secretary General of BSSN, Soetedjo Joewono, and the Chairman of Asbanda, Agus H. Widodo, and witnessed by the Head of BSSN, Nugroho Sulistyo Budi.

In an executive briefing to the board of directors of Regional Development Banks (BPD), Nugroho said that technological developments are always followed by increasing cyber threats, so the aspect of security must go hand in hand with digital innovation in banking.

“Cybersecurity is no longer just a technical matter, but has become an important pillar in mitigating business risks,” said Nugroho.

According to him, the commitment of the BPD’s board of directors in overseeing the implementation of cybersecurity is an important factor in building digital resilience in the banking sector.

Meanwhile, Agus H. Widodo said that digital transformation has become a necessity for the banking industry, including BPD. However, on the other hand, cyber threats are also developing more rapidly, becoming more complex and organised.

“Cyber attacks not only impact information technology systems, but can also affect public trust, operational stability, institutional reputation, even regional and national economic stability. Therefore, cybersecurity must be seen as a strategic national issue and an important part of the resilience of the Indonesian financial industry,” he said.

Asbanda believes that BPD has a strategic position as a partner of local governments, a driver of the local economy, a supporter of MSMEs, and a provider of financial services to communities in various regions of Indonesia. Therefore, maintaining the cybersecurity of BPD is considered important to ensure the continuity of public services and regional economic activities.

Through this collaboration, BSSN and Asbanda will strengthen synergy in building a secure and reliable digital banking system, including through improving cybersecurity capacity, strengthening human resource competence, developing an early warning system, and strengthening IT governance and risk management.
