Jakarta (ANTARA) – Indonesia’s National Standardisation Agency (BSN) had established six Indonesian National Standards (SNI) related to hydrogen technology by September 2026, in an effort to support the development of clean energy.

Speaking at an online event marking World Standards Day (WSD) 2026 on Wednesday, BSN Head Donny Purnomo said five of the six standards adopt international ISO standards. They cover safety, fuel quality, refuelling infrastructure and low-carbon hydrogen.

“Standardisation and conformity assessment play an important role in ensuring quality and safety throughout the hydrogen value chain, from production, storage, transport and distribution to use,” he said.

According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Indonesia consumes around 1.75 million tonnes of hydrogen a year. Its use is dominated by the urea industry, at 88 per cent, followed by ammonia production at 4 per cent and oil refineries at 2 per cent.

As of 10 September 2026, the BSN had also recorded 9,922 active SNI standards across various sectors.

Donny added that the challenges in developing hydrogen technology lay not only in formulating standards in line with technological advances, but also in applying them effectively throughout the value chain.

Meanwhile, Eniya Listiani Dewi, Director General of New, Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, stressed the importance of collaboration among the government, industry, academia, associations and the media in building an integrated hydrogen ecosystem.

By strengthening standardisation and cross-sector cooperation, the BSN hopes hydrogen technology development will drive innovation, enhance industrial competitiveness and support Indonesia’s sustainable energy transition.
