BSI's QRIS Now Valid in China, No Need to Exchange Currency When Shopping

JAKARTA - PT Bank Syariah Indonesia (Persero) Tbk or BSI has begun facilitating cross-border Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) transactions in China through its BYOND by BSI mobile banking application. BSI’s Director of Information Technology, Muharto Hadi Suprapto, stated that BSI customers can now make transactions using QRIS in China via the BYOND by BSI app. Currently, payments using QRIS in China can be made at merchants displaying the UnionPay and Alipay logos. The implementation of this service follows the cross-border payment cooperation between Bank Indonesia (BI) and the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) through the RI-China Cross-Border QRIS, which was officially launched on 30 April 2026. Through this cooperation, Indonesians can make payment transactions using QRIS while in China. Conversely, tourists from China can also use a similar payment system when transacting in Indonesia. With this Cross-Border QRIS, Indonesians no longer need to exchange foreign currency (foreign exchange) when wanting to transact in cooperating countries. Muharto explained that strengthening cross-country digital transaction services is part of BSI’s strategy to expand the reach of Sharia financial services while supporting the mobility of Indonesians abroad. According to him, the trend of using digital services continues to increase in line with changes in public preferences that increasingly prioritise practical and fast transactions through mobile banking applications. To date, the number of BYOND by BSI mobile banking users has reached approximately 9.8 million users. In addition, the number of merchants using BSI’s QRIS services continues to grow. As of March 2026, there are more than 600,000 merchants that have accepted BSI QRIS payments across various business sectors.
