The aroma of kanji rumbi porridge rose from the large kitchen in the courtyard of Masjid Darussalam, Aceh Tamiang, on Saturday (7 March 2026). Hundreds of children sat in neat lines waiting for Iftar. In their hands they held bags containing school supplies and Ramadan donations.

There, PT Bank Syariah Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BSI), together with Danantara Indonesia, organised a charitable activity for 5,000 orphans and the poor (dhuafa) across Indonesia. The event was staged simultaneously nationwide, with the main programme taking place at nine locations. Aceh Tamiang was chosen as the main focal point of this year’s BSI Berbagi. The region is one of the areas currently undergoing recovery after a disaster. For many children there, the sharing event becomes a Ramadan moment that brings back cheer. The location is also near temporary housing (huntara) built by the Indonesian government in collaboration with Danantara and Indonesian state-owned enterprises, including BSI.

BSI’s President Director Anggoro Eko Cahyo attended in person at the site, together with the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners Prof Muhadjir Effendy, the Chairman of the Sharia Supervisory Board Prof KH Hasanudin, and BSI’s Director of Information Technology Muharto Hadi Suprapto. They helped cook the kanji rumbi porridge with residents, the Acehnese Iftar dish.

“Education is a fundamental foundation for Indonesia’s future. Through this charitable activity, we want to bring joy and also give encouragement for the children to keep studying and to pursue their dreams,” said Anggoro.

This donation programme is part of BSI Berbagi, a social activity routinely organised since the largest sharia bank in Indonesia was established in 2021. This year marks the fifth edition, coinciding with BSI’s fifth anniversary.

The number of beneficiaries this year reached 5,000 children, up around 20 per cent from the previous year’s 4,444. In addition to donations, BSI also distributed Quran waqf to various pesantrens across Indonesia.

For BSI, Ramadan is not only a momentum for worship but also an opportunity to strengthen social care. The bank also facilitates people who wish to donate through the BYOND by BSI digital service, including the Donasi Anak Yatim and Berbagi THR Yatim features.

During the first two weeks of Ramadan 1447 AH, transactions of zakat, infak, sedekah, and waqaf through the app rose by about 14 per cent.

In addition, BSI continues to promote access to education for the younger generation through the BSI Scholarship programme. To date, more than 10,000 scholarships have been distributed to high-achieving pupils and students from underprivileged families across various regions.

In Aceh Tamiang that afternoon, as the maghrib call approached, the children began opening their meal packages. Little laughter could be heard among them.

Ramadan, for them, became a little warmer.
