Brunei Sultan Abruptly Strips Daughter-in-Law of Royal Title

Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei has unexpectedly revoked the royal title ‘Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Isteri’ from his daughter-in-law. The decisive order, targeting Pengiran Raabi’atul Adawiyyah Pengiran Haji Bolkiah, was reported to take effect immediately.

Citing The Vibes, the revocation of this prestigious title was officially announced by the Royal Household Office. Pengiran Raabi’atul Adawiyyah is known to be the wife of Prince ’Abdul Malik Hassanal Bolkiah, one of the Sultan’s sons.

Acting Head of the Royal Household, Pengiran Haji Raffizanna Pengiran Haji Razali, confirmed that the action was a direct instruction. ‘This revocation was carried out following a royal decree from Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah,’ he stated.

According to state broadcaster RTB News, the decision was made after the daughter-in-law’s conduct was deemed unbecoming for a spouse of a royal family member. The report also detailed that Raabi’atul’s actions were considered to have broadly tarnished the monarchy’s reputation. The controversial behaviour was even judged to have shown a clear lack of respect towards Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. However, the palace provided no specific details regarding the behaviour or incident that triggered the forced revocation. The official palace announcement also did not reveal whether there would be further sanctions against Pengiran Raabi’atul Adawiyyah in the future.
