BRR disburses aid for mosque renovation

BANDA ACEH, Aceh: The Aceh Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Body (BRR) has poured funds of Rp 2 billion (US$200,000) into the renovation and reconstruction of 70 mosques and houses of worship across the tsunami-wrecked province.

Mirza Keumala, a BRR spokesperson, said most of the mosques and houses of worship were located in Banda Aceh with 23, followed by Aceh Besar regency, 18, Aceh Jaya, Aceh Jaya 7 and others.

The amount of money for each mosque or prayer house differed depending on the scale of the damage. The largest amount of money was Rp 70 million while the smallest amount was Rp 6.3 million. "The amount of money was proposed by the managements of the mosques or the houses of worship themselves," said Mirza.

The program focused on mosques and houses of worship built near tents and barracks inhabited by tsunami survivors. -- Antara
