Bromo Fire Area Expands to 570 Hectares

The area affected by wildfires in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) has expanded to 520 hectares, a significant increase from the previously recorded 176 hectares. The Head of the TNBTS Centre, Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, confirmed the updated figure on Sunday, noting that the fire reignited on Saturday night, 8 August 2026. The blaze not only scorched the cliffs but also spread to the Bromo savanna. Rudijanta explained that strong winds since Saturday afternoon allowed the fire to spread rapidly from the upper cliffs downwards. Upon reaching the lower areas, the flames ignited dry grasses and plants, which accelerated the fire’s movement across the Tengger Caldera Ring Road (JLKT) towards the savanna. The frost conditions also contributed to the rapid spread. Observations at the site revealed blackened remnants of burnt grass across the savanna, with some dry grass along the JLKT from the Jemplang side in Malang Regency also affected. Joint patrol officers were seen monitoring the area to ensure no new hotspots emerged, while white smoke continued to billow from the cliffs in Probolinggo Regency. Water bombing helicopters were deployed, collecting water from Ranu Pani to douse remaining smoke plumes, as ground vehicles moved in from Jemplang to assist with land-based firefighting efforts.
