Bromo Accident: Local Authorities Urged to Improve Safety of Aging Tourist Jeeps
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – A fatal accident at Mount Bromo recently drew widespread attention, raising concerns over the condition of tourist jeeps used by travel agents. The vehicle, which overturned after hitting a cliff, has sparked questions about the safety of aging tourist vehicles.
Sony Susmana, Training Director of Safety Defensive Consultant Indonesia, stated that tourists cannot choose which jeep to use, as operators typically assign them through a random queue system. This leaves visitors unable to reject vehicles that appear unfit for service.
Beyond vehicle condition, human error plays a critical role. Tourists’ excitement often leads drivers to exceed safe speeds. ‘The passengers’ enthusiasm can make drivers more aggressive, which is dangerous. It ultimately depends on the drivers’ competence in controlling themselves and their emotions,’ he said.
The jeeps, mostly old 4x4s requiring comprehensive maintenance, are not safe despite their four-wheel drive capability. Sony emphasised that local tourism offices and regional governments must intervene to address safety issues, as the current system places public safety at risk.
‘Tourism Office and local government must take action to fix these issues. While there are supporting facilities at the tourist site, safety must remain the priority,’ he added.
