Broken-hearted girl chops mother

CILACAP, Central Java: Blinded by frustration and resentment, Santi, 20, wielded a machete at her 50-year-old mother and struck her several fatal blows to the head.

The incident occurred after Santi's parents decided to break up her relationship with a local boy she hoped to marry. Last Tuesday, in a state of depression, Santi went into the kitchen, grabbed the machete and confronted her mother, Karsini.

Cilacap police chief Lt. Col. Soeroso said after arresting Santi that the police believe the girl may be suffering from severe stress and a mental illness. (wah/mds)
